In recent months nearly every major news organization has reported on drug-related violence in Mexico. Yet narcotics trafficking is far from a recent phenomenon. This panel will move beyond the current spectacular reporting on Mexico by addressing broader historical and cultural issues related to the illicit flow of drugs. Paul Gootenberg will provide an historical overview of drugs in the Americas with specific reference to Mexico; Froylán Enciso will talk about the state of Sinaloa, home to one of country’s major cartels; Elaine Carey will discuss her current research on women and smuggling; and Oscar Bernal will consider the role of narco-corridos, or drug-themed ballads.
