The New Politics of Latin America

Bildner Center Faculty Development Workshop Series, 2003-2004

This year the Bildner Center will be hosting a City University of New York Faculty Development Workshop Series on Latin America. The Seminar will consist of a series of lectures and discussions by leading scholars in the study of Latin America. Topics will range from political and social conditions in different countries in the region to critical themes in contemporary Latin America such as human rights and US Latin American Relations. The Seminar will meet between 4:30 and 6:30 on Fridays approximately every three weeks. In addition to these regular meetings, the seminar will also host day-long pedagogy and research workshops in April and May. The pedagogy workshop will bring City University of New York faculty together to discuss teaching techniques that may be of special use when teaching Latin America. The research workshop will give City University of New York faculty the opportunity to present and discuss their current research. These meetings are open to all CUNY faculty. The New Politics of Latin America: Challenges to Democratic Consolidation and Reform Workshop Series has been organized by Prof. Desmond Arias and Prof. Mauricio Font.

Desmond Arias is an Assistant Professor of Government at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. He teaches on comparative crime and policing. His research on criminal organization, human rights, and democratic order is based on field work in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil between 1996 and 2002.

Mauricio Font is director of the Bildner Center for Western Hemisphere Studies and Professor of Sociology at The Graduate Center and Queens College, City University of New York. His research examines problems of development and reform in Brazil, Cuba and Latin America as well as international cooperation in the Western Hemisphere.
