President-elect Felipe Calderón will take office on the first of December. Mr Calderón, the candidate of the PAN (National Action Party), won by a slight margin over Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the PRD (Democratic Revolution Party), with Roberto Madrazo of the PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party) coming in third. Calderón has laid out a plan for reform in the coming years, pledging to tackle poverty, create jobs and promote equality. Within the context of continued tension following the election, what are the prospects for reform and development for the new government? Moreover, what are the prospects for further consolidation of the still new democratic system?
