Samuel Valenzuela specializes in Comparative Historical and Political Sociology. His research has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation. It has focused on the origins of democracies, on parties, and on the formation and development of labor movements. He has also written on comparative methodology and development theory. His areas of expertise are Latin America and Western Europe, in particular Chile and the Southern Cone and England and France. His book Democratización via reforma (1985), opened the reassessment of nineteenth century elections in Latin America. He is also co-author of Chile: A Country Study, a co-editor and author of four additional books, and author of more than sixty articles in journals and books. Before coming to Notre Dame he taught at Harvard and Yale Universities, and he has been a Visiting Professor at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris, and Visiting Fellow at St. Antony’s College, Oxford University.
